As the courses became larger and more technical, it was harder to squeeze them into the stadium and provide all the support they needed. It also reflects a change in the popularity of showjumping and horses in general.

Now that closing ceremonies are extravaganzas, they also take a lot more preparation and set-up, and trying to do a fussy jump course in the same space would be much harder. Though with the melange of stuff that appeared in the opening ceremonies at London, a nice drag hunt would have not been out of place, galloping across the field. So, Trafalgar, you're right.

IIRC, Mexico City might be the last Olympics with showjumping on center stage. Someone here will know. They did it in LA in '84 as well. I am positive its on my highlight VHS tape and I recall watching it live. Not so sure about Seoul and thereafter.
